Applying Pirate Principles to Small Businesses

use-this-img_0090The 21st Century Building Expo & Conference in Charlotte, NC on Sept. 15 was a roaring success in several ways for Cody and Vision Design Build Remodel. Steve Monroe and Cody had a great response to the seminar they presented entitled  “Who Says It Has to be a Fair Fight?” A wide variety of attendees—builders, NAHB associate members, realtors, marketing professionals, trade contractors, landscape designers, and remodelers—enjoyed their class.

The goal of the session was to share 22 important principles that are based on how the famous pirate, Blackbeard, ran his crew. Four hundred years later, people are still thinking about how a lot of the things he did really worked! Pirates are known for being self-promoters, motivators, risk takers, great networkers, strong leaders, and team builders. Blackbeard’s strategies can be helpful to smaller businesses in the building industry as they seek to prosper in competition with large companies.

A few of the Pirate Principles Cody and Steve shared were:

    1. Know your territory and use that to your advantage.
    2. Fight smartly. A small company can be swift and maneuverable. Problems can be handled in a timely manner because you don’t have to go through the division president and all those other department heads down the line.
    3. Fear not! Show your true colors. Be who you are. Respectfully tell your distinctive story while you do what you do.

Small building companies, like Vision Design Build Remodel, can differentiate themselves in a positive way to their potential clients, such as yourself. For example, nationwide home builders may be arriving in our area and buying up almost every available lot. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you should choose that company to build your home. As a smaller company, we can give more personal attention to our clients’ needs.

Small local companies have boots on the ground so we can listen to the people in our community. We know what is going on in our area—we have personal relationships with inspectors and key trades, so we know the future plans for our area. We are the company you can count on to keep you informed. And when problems arise, a small business can turn around and handle them fairly quickly. With a larger business, you have to go through a number of different people to find the answer.

We invite you to contact Vision Design Build Remodel to see how a smaller company can fulfill all your wishes for your project in an individual and personal way. And we make the process easier by offering a competitive price, using the best materials on the market, and completing the job on time.
