Maximizing Outdoor Space with Decks

Maximizing Outdoor Space with DecksThere are a lot of options when it comes to building decks on your property. You probably enjoy spending time outdoors in the summer, whether for a family get-together, barbecue, or to simply enjoy the pleasant weather while reading a favorite book. In the past decade, options for decking material have increased, so you have choices in the way your deck looks and feels. A few popular (and long-standing) choices are redwood and cedar. Since both of these types of wood have rich color and naturally resist decay and rot, they both offer great benefits for decks. They are a more expensive option, so if you are looking to save money, you may want to go with something more economical.

Pressure-treated lumber is another popular choice when building decks in a backyard. It is much cheaper, and more than 75% of decks built in the United States have this type of wood finish. You can stain it to be the color you like, and regular pressure washing and stain application will extend its life. Some people complain that it is not very durable, and it may crack or splinter under pressure, but it is the most cost-effective option.

You can spend a lot more if you choose imported tropical woods, such as mahogany or tigerwood, but they do have great benefits, including durability and resistance to rot. These materials are extremely hard, so they are more difficult to work with and you will probably end up spending more on the installation of the decks as well.
